Estate of David Esterly

David Esterly (1944-2019) has been a professional limewood carver since the 1970s and has been profiled in the New York Times, The New Yorker, The Times, The Financial Times, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, Apollo, on the Martha Stewart Show, and on BBC Channel 4, as well as in numerous woodworking, design, arts, and similar publications.  He is the author of Grinling Gibbons and the Art of Carving (V&A Publications and Abrams, 1998), which The Independent lauded as “a marvelous study, erudite, genial and well-informed,” and he curated the V&A exhibition on Gibbons in 1998.  He has also written numerous articles and reviews in The Spectator, the TLS, The Independent Magazine, The Sunday Telegraph, Apollo, The Burlington Magazine, House and Garden, Traditional Home, and others.

The Lost Carving: A Journey to the Heart of Making

David Esterly's newest book, The Lost Carving: A Journey to the Heart of Making, is a haunting meditation on art and craft depicting the year he spent at Hampton Court Palace replacing a destroyed woodcarving by the renowned Grinling Gibbons, and will be published by Viking in December 2012.

A show of David Esterly's work will be at W.M. Brady and Company in New York City from January 8-18.
